Anyu Angelov, Lt. Gen (Ret.)

Deputy Minister of Defence

Lt. Gen. (Ret.) Anyu Angelov was born on 22 December 1942 in Haskovo, Bulgaria. He has an Engineer’s Degree in Radio Electronics and a Master’s Degree in Operational and Strategic Leadership of the Defence and Armed Forces. He is a graduate of the Higher National Military Artillery School and G. S. Rakovski National Defence Academy. Mr. Angelov has completed a postgraduate specialization course at the General Staff Academy of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation in Moscow and has taken a special officer’s course at NATO Defence College in Rome, Italy.

Mr. Angelov started his career as Commander of an autonomous platoon, and later on was Deputy Chief of Department at the Land Forces Air Defence Command, Chief of Staff and Brigade Commander. From 1987 to 1990 he was Land Forces Air Defence Chief of Staff, and from 1990 to 1992 he was Land Forces Air Defence Commander in Chief. Until 1994 he was Deputy Commander in Chief of Bulgarian Land Forces, and from December 1994 to September 1997 he was Deputy Chief of the General Staff of the Bulgarian Armed Forces.

From November 1997 to August 2000, Mr. Angelov was Defence Attache of the Republic of Bulgaria to the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. Later on, until February 2002, he was Commandant of G. S. Rakovski National Defence Academy. For a short period in 2002, he was Director for Defence Planning at the Ministry of Defence.

Before assuming office as Deputy Minister, Anyu Angelov was President of the Center for National Security Research Foundation.

Mr. Angelov is an Honourable member of NATO Defence College Anciens’ Association.

Mr. Angelov has been awarded an order of merit, medals, a Commendation Medal “For Meritorious Service under the Colours” – First Grade, twice a personal weapon – pistol; and twice binoculars, as well as other non-monetary awards.
