South-Eastern Europe Brigade (SEEBRIG) - formation established by seven participating nations in order to contribute to the regional security and stability in the Euro-Atlantic area

Brigadier General Giovanni SULIS

The Brigadier General Giovanni SULIS was born in ORANI (Sardinia) on 24th of June 1952.

After completing the high school classical curriculum, he attended the Military Academy of MODENA (1971-1973) and the Branch School of TORINO (1973-1975) achieving the rank of lieutenant in the Signal Corps.

From 1975 to 1987 he was platoon and company commander of signal units, successively in Alpine Brigade “Tridentina”, Paratrooper Brigade “Folgore” and Sardinia Military Region Headquarters.

He was promoted to the rank of major in 1988. He attended the 110th Army Staff Advanced Course at the War School and he was transferred to the Army General Staff in ROME in July 1989.

From 1991 to 1992, as lieutenant-colonel, he was commander of the 8th Electronic Research Battalion “Tonale” in ANZIO; for the next three years he was Chief of the Logistics Department in the Regional Headquarters.

In 1995 he was promoted to the rank of colonel. He was commander of the 11th Signal Regiment “Leonessa” in the IFOR mission in Bosnia Herzegovina accomplishing also the connections within the competence sector and to the motherland.

In 1996 he was transferred to Sardinia Military Region Headquarters as Operational Assistant Chief of Staff.

From April till September 1998 he was again appointed Chief of Factions Liaison Office in the mission SFOR in Bosnia, where he accomplished the liaisons of the Factions in the South-Eastern Multinational Division “Salamandre” (MOSTAR).

In October 1998 he returned to CAGLIARI as Chief of General Staff in the Regional Headquarters. In May 2000 he was appointed Italian Military Representative in the Romanian General Staff in BUCHAREST.

There, as “Military Adviser” for the CIS sector, he carried out the Strategic Telecommunications System STAR and its operational connection to the NATO systems.

In January 2001 he was promoted to the rank of Brigadier General.

From January till July 2002 he attended the 11th Session of the Romanian National Defence College of BUCHAREST, which gave him the opportunity to broaden his knowledge of the Balkans area and of the South-Eastern Europe studying historical, geographic, political and military issues.

The Brigadier General SULIS has a Strategic Science degree, a Political Science degree and a fair knowledge of English, French and Romanian.

He has been appointed the 3rd Commander of SEEBRIG/MPFSEE since 25th of July 2003.

He is married to Mrs. Maria Assunta and they have two sons: Daniele (20) and Manlio (17).

He was awarded with:

– Gold cross for the long service

– Silver medal having been paratrooper at length

– Long term Command Silver Medal

– Casualty honour badge

– Memorial cross having been on a peace-keeping mission in Bosnia – Herzegovina

– NATO medal for having served in former Yugoslavia

– Mauriziana medal.

– The National Romanian order for excellence in the rank of High Officer with Insignia.

– The National Defense Medal of the French MOD.
