SEEBRIG Celebrates Landmark Trifold Ceremony in Istanbul After Successful Relocation
A historic triple-event ceremony unfolded in Istanbul, Türkiye, on 27 August 2026 as the South-Eastern Europe Brigade (SEEBRIG) officially celebrated the Headquarters (HQ) Activation in its new location in Istanbul, Türkiye as well as a high-profile Command Hand-over/Take-over (HOTO), while also celebrating the SEEBRIG’s 27th Anniversary. Held at the Org. Muharrem Mazlum İskora Barracks, the occasion marked the beginning of a fresh chapter for the multinational brigade. High-ranking political and military leaders gathered alongside defense attachés and international diplomats to honor nearly three decades of sustained regional security cooperation.
The grand event stands as the definitive culmination of SEEBRIG’s highly complex relocation process, which successfully moved its operations from North Macedonia to Türkiye. This transition follows a successful six-year chapter at Camp “Boro Menkov” in Kumanovo, which officially concluded with a closing ceremony earlier in July. The smooth transfer highlights the operational flexibility and logistical readiness of the brigade’s core personnel, seamlessly pivoting to a new host nation without interrupting their defense obligations.
As the host nation for this new stationing period scheduled to last until 2032, Türkiye provided meticulously designed, modern facilities to fully accommodate the multinational force. The official activation of the headquarters in Istanbul demonstrates the collective commitment of the participating nations to regional peace. Officials note that this physical transition underscores the brigade’s foundational resilience and strategic agility, reflecting the “Three R’s” doctrine that guides the command: Readiness, Relevance, and Relationships-building.
The event reached its emotional peak during the traditional Change of Command ceremony, symbolizing the orderly transition of military leadership. Bulgarian Army Brigadier General (BG) Ivan Malamov officially assumed command of the SEEBRIG Headquarters, stepping into the role for the next three years. He takes over the reins from the outgoing Commander, Albanian Army BG Bilbil Bitri, who successfully guided the brigade through its demanding physical relocation process and concluded a distinguished three-year term.
Simultaneously, the gathering celebrated the 27th Anniversary of SEEBRIG’s establishment, tracing its origin back to 1999. Formed to enhance stability in Southeastern Europe and cultivate neighborly relations, the brigade has spent nearly three decades reinforcing Euro-Atlantic security. The anniversary segment served to honor the historical achievements of the multinational unit, which remains a key mechanism for cooperative dialogue and crisis management within the South-Eastern Europe Defence Ministerial (SEDM) framework.
In his farewell remarks, the outgoing Commander, BG Bilbil Bitri, reflected on the immense shared efforts that made the relocation possible. He remarked that “Concluding our chapter in Kumanovo and successfully establishing our new home here in Istanbul is a testament to the dedication of our nucleus staff.” He emphasized that the transition succeeded because of the enduring spirit of multinational cooperation, thanking the personnel for their professionalism during a period of immense organizational efforts.
Taking the podium, the incoming Commander, BG Ivan Malamov, shared a forward-looking vision for his three-year te
nure, stating that “Assuming command at this historic juncture is both an honor and a profound responsibility.” He pledged to focus heavily on advancing collective training, streamlining technical capabilities, and maximizing the tactical advantages of their new co-location, keeping the brigade relevant and responsive to modern defense realities.
Addressing the audience, the Commander of the Turkish Land Forces, General Metin Tokel, stated that “With the redeployment of the headquarters in our country, I believe that joint training, planning, and coordination activities will further develop, and that interoperability will be taken to a higher level through the sharing of acquired experiences.”
Witnessed by delegations from the core participating nations— Albania, Bulgaria, Greece, North Macedonia, Romania, and Türkiye — the ceremony reinforced the strength of the regional defense architecture. The unique structure of the brigade continues to serve as a model for regional integration.
As the SEEBRIG standard was passed to the new Commander and the new facilities were declared fully active, the ceremony concluded on a high note of regional solidarity. With its new headquarters operational in Istanbul, SEEBRIG enters the final stretch of the decade structurally modernized and strategically repositioned. The successful execution of the day’s trifold agenda reaffirms that the brigade stands ready to remain a pillar of stability, conflict prevention, and peace support operations across South-Eastern Europe.
